Intent
At Trinity Road, we aim for our Design Technology (DT) curriculum to foster creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in our young learners. We aim to provide a rich and engaging environment where students can develop a passion for DT through hands-on experiences, development of practical skills and real-world applications. Our curriculum is designed to:
- Encourage pupils to express themselves through design, allowing them to generate ideas and use imagination to overcome challenges.
- Equip students with the technical skills needed to work with various materials and tools safely and effectively, promoting confidence in their abilities.
- Inspire pupils to understand the impact of design on society and the environment, promoting responsible consumption and sustainable practices.
Implementation
Our Design Technology curriculum has been carefully sequenced in line with the National Curriculum: providing clear progression and building on skills and knowledge from EYFS to Year 6. Each unit is aligned with the Design and Technology Association guidelines and includes clear learning objectives. We prioritise hands-on activities where pupils can design, make, and evaluate their projects. Each unit includes opportunities to work with a variety of materials, tools and technologies, such as textiles, woodwork and digital media.
Impact
The impact of our DT curriculum is evident in the progress and achievements of our pupils. Through regular monitoring, assessment and evaluation, we ensure that every child makes excellent progress from their individual starting points.
Our aim is that all pupils exhibit a strong grasp of DT concepts and skills with assessments showing that the majority of students meet or exceed age-related expectations in design, making and evaluating. We also strive for all pupils to show an increased understanding of sustainability and ethical considerations when developing, implementing and evaluating their design ideas.
