Geography is taught and studied across the school through our half termly topics. The first half of the Autumn term and the whole of the Spring term are our Geography topic times across the school. Below are details of the Geography learning that will take place over the course of this academic year.
EYFS | During the first half of Autumn term Crystal and Sapphire classes will be looking at locations within their immediate vicinity through the topic of ‘My Home and School’. In Summer term the children will be looking at different journeys. Through discussions, visits, drawings and looking at images children will explore locations that are familiar to them. |
Year 1 | During the first half of Autumn term Year 1 will be studying the city of Chelmsford as well as the four countries that make up the United Kingdom. In the Spring term the children will be looking at the woodland as a geographical habitat. |
Year 2 | During the first half of Autumn term Year 2 will be studying the city of Chelmsford in greater depth and making comparisons with other cities from around the world. During the Spring term they will be looking at major Seas and Oceans from around the world. |
Years 3 and 4 | During the first half of Autumn term Lower Key Stage Two will be studying the different counties that make up the United Kingdom. During the Spring term they will be looking at the hemispheres of the world. |
Years 5 and 6 | During the first half of Autumn term Upper Key Stage Two will be studying Our World, looking at the different continents, oceans and hemispheres, and making comparisons of them. During the Spring term they will be looking at the locations of volcanoes and earthquakes that occur around the world and studying some in more depth as case studies. |
Within Geography lessons throughout the school, children will study the subject through use of questioning, observation and investigation, using a range of primary and secondary sources. They will develop their map and compass knowledge as well as creating their own maps using developed skills. They will also develop confidence and understanding of a wide variety of information sources that can assist them within their investigations and studies.
As well as looking at Geography within our own country and around the world, and developing our Geography skills here at Trinity Road Primary School, we also feel it is very important for children to undertake field work and experience places of different geographical interest. Our curriculum is designed to provide exciting opportunities for children to do this throughout their time with us.
